Community groups are small group communities within our
church that gather weekly or bi-weekly. The purpose of community groups extends
from our ‘loving people’ phase. We aim to take what is written in Acts 2:42 and
live that out in our community groups: “They devoted themselves to the apostles
teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Community groups are broken down into two, four-month
semesters (September – December & January – April) and are open for people
to join at the beginning of each with a 3 week grace period. A community group
will ideally consist of 6-10 people. If a group consistently reaches 12 or
more, it will need to split into two groups. Research has shown that it is
easier for openness and trust to take place in a smaller size group the
following semester.
Jericho Road community groups will be encouraged to meet at
the home of the individual or couple who are leading the group, but can be held
at anyone’s home who is a regular attendee at Jericho Road Church. Community
groups are open for anyone to join who can fully commit to consistency. This
means at least 3 out of 4 consecutive meetings. It is ultimately up to the
community group leader as to what the group will study for each semester.
It is also our desire for each community group to take on
one service project each semester. Each group is able to choose what they want
to do and may glean ideas and specific needs from the Acts 1:8 team.
For those interested in leading a community group, we hold
our leader training in August of each year. This year it will be on Monday,
August 16, 2010 at 7 p.m. at the home of Eric and Jen Wagenmaker: 1683 E.
Oakdale, Muskegon.
For more information on how to get involved, please email Eric Wagenmaker.
